This is a part of wider ongoing work on macroeconometric modeling for India being carried out at the Delhi School of Economics and Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. An earlier version of the paper was presented at a conference on Money and Finance in the Indian Economy, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, December 2–4, 1998. We have received helpful comments from seminar participants and others, particularly from Professor K. Krishnamurty, Professor V. Pandit, Dr. R. Krishnan, and Dr. P. K. Pani. Devender Pratap, U. Sarangi, and Inder Kumar helped with collection and computerization of data. Beverly Meyers provided an excellent secretarial assistance. We are grateful to all of them. The usual disclaimers apply. Financial assistance from the National Science Foundation for this project is acknowledged.
