Abstract

Summary Populations of Polygonatum verticillatum were studied in Scotland and south-west Scandinavia. Soil fertility and light appear to be the most important factors determining vegetative vigour and reproductive potential affecting rhizome size and flower production. Differences between the two geographic areas and between different habitats are discussed in the context of the rarity of P. verticillatum in Scotland and the need for informed conservation.
