Abstract
A concept for the production of energetic radioactive ion beams (RIBs) at the ISOLDE (CERN) facility using an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) as a charge state multiplier is described. A low-energy, singly-charged ion beam from an on-line separator is injected into an EBIS and after subsequent charge state multiplication the beam is extracted and accelerated in a RFQ-linac accelerator. Efficiency measurements of the charge state breeding process have been performed by injecting a N+ beam into an EBIS. A total efficiency of 14.5% was obtained with no losses of the trapped ions for confinement times up to 200 ms.
