Abstract

Aerial photographs of Qasr Ibrim recently discovered in the archives of the Egypt Exploration Society throw new light on activity in the immediate environs of the fortress. As well as the cemeteries already known and published, they demonstrate the presence of a walled area immediately below the Northwest Bastion, extending to the cliff edge. The interior of this area has been heavily dug over. Nothing was recorded about this area in the surveys of the 1930s or 1960s, neither do early travellers to the site record significant information about it. This article will discuss the evidence for the remains visible from the photographs, and put forward some tentative suggestions as to their purpose and dating.
