Abstract
The article presents the comparison of the images of main heroes, of the principles of writers’ characteristics, of the philosophical and historical-theoretical approaches to them in the novels and dramas at the end of nineteenth – early twentieth century. There are compared the works by Dmitrii Merezhkovsky, Valerii Brjusov, Henrik Johan Ibsen, Jacques Benoist-Méchen. The variety in approaches to the image of Emperor Julian Apostata is dictated by the complicacy and contradictoriness as of the historical hero himself,so of the time of action, namely the transitional period from paganism to Christianity, from Roman to Byzantine Empire, from antiquity to early Middle Ages.

Многообразие подходов к образу императора Юлиана Отступника предопределено сложностью и противоречивостью как исторического героя, так и самого времени действия – переходного – от язычества – к христианству, от Римской империи – к Византийской, от Античности – к раннесредневековым истокам. – в эпоху кардинальных перемен в истории мировой цивилизации, шедшей навстречу «железному новому веку», образ византийского императора, вступившего в безумную игру с Историей, стал центральным в произведениях разных авторов – писателей и драматургов, поэтов и прозаиков, как в России, так и за рубежом. Первым в этом ряду в России был выдающийся поэт, создатель и теоретик символизма в искусстве и литературе, сочинитель нового манифеста символистов Дмитрий Сергеевич Мережковский (1865– 1941).
