Abstract

E.S.R. and proton ENDOR measurements have been made at 10 K on single crystals of zinc acetate dihydrate lightly doped with copper. The copper ions occupy zinc sites. Hyperfine coupling tensors have been measured for the four protons in the two chelating water molecules: the spin densities at two protons in a particular water molecule have opposite sign. Hyperfine tensors have also been measured for two protons in the water molecules in the nearest-neighbour complexes along the b axis, which are involved in hydrogen bonds to the paramagnetic complex. Limited hyperfine data have also been obtained for water protons in nearest-neighbours along the c direction, which are also involved in hydrogen bonding; some of the information about these protons was obtained from powder ENDOR spectra.
