Abstract

Adult, hypophysectomized Anolis carolinensis with seasonally quiescent ovaries were treated with daily, subcutaneous injections of either 0.05 ml saline, 1 μg estradiol-17β, or 10 μg ovine follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) for 48 or 96 hr. One hour before sacrifice, each animal received an intraperitoneal injection of 3 μCi 3H-thymidine. Autoradiographs of the serially sectioned ovaries were prepared and the percentage labeling index (%LI), which is the ratio of labeled cells to all cells in the sample × 100, was determined. After FSH treatment, the %LI was significantly higher in the ovarian medullary stroma, the basal granulosa cells in larger previtellogenic follicles (0.51–1.00 mm), and the theca of all follicular size classes present (0.01–1.00 mm). Estradiol had no significant effect on these parameters. These results are discussed in relation to the effects of FSH and estradiol on follicular maturation in reptiles.
