Abstract

The automatic system presented in this paper is based on a manual system, which was developed in collaboration with a team of physicians at the Molinette Hospital in Turin. The previous manual system had been used to perform trials and measurements on gel phantoms (aquasonic, polyacrylamide), for experiments in animals, and for clinical therapy in cancer patients. We then felt the need for a fully automatic system to ensure safe operating conditions, to avoid human errors, to standardize treatment protocol, and to record all relevant data of the treatment. A further goal was to avoid damage to the radiofrequency (RF) generators and apparatuses in the case of failures or human error (Audone et al. 1984).
