Abstract

A method is described for locating and estimating the plutonium content of waste drums, without the need for opening the drums. The method relies upon the measurement of the 384 keV γ-radiation from 239Pu and uses a simple form of γ-spectrometer and a drum scanner. The detection sensitivity enables the measurement of plutonium within the range 22 mg–20 g, with a measurement accuracy of 4–30%, depending upon the nature of the waste present in the drums and the ability to correct for self absorption and interfering radiation.
