Abstract

The study of the surface characteristics of underground tunnels has led to the development of an automated tunnel surface measurenlent system, using two coupled intelligent motor drives to manipulate a range finding laser. Working unattended for up to 4 hours, the system collects a suite of distance measurenlents. froln a Inono-rail positioned parallel to the tunnel axis, to points around its circumference. After translating each point measured from polar to rectangular coordinates. the resulting data represents the tunnel surface in the form of a digital terrain model, and can be viewed and manipulated as a topography.
