An Autoethnography on the Socialization of a Novice Teacher in a Small Elementary School

Abstract

이 글의 목적은 한 농어촌지역 초임교사의 생존전략을 내부자적 관점에서 조명함으로써 소규모 초등학교 교사의 교직사회화 과정을 조명하는 데 있다. 이 글은 자문화기술지에 기초하여 질적 자료를 수집하였으며, 실용적 절충주의에 기초한 주제 분석을 통하여 범주(3개)와 하위범주 (6개)를 생성하였다. 첫째, 농어촌지역 소규모 초등학교 초임교사는 단위학교 교직원들 사이에서 위계적 권력관계를 내면화하였다. 특히, 연구자로서의 나는 경력교사들과의 관계 측면에서 전략적으로 순응함으로써 점차적으로 교직사회에 적응하였다. 둘째, 초임교사이자 연구자로서의 나는 학생 및 학부모들과의 관계형성과 관련하여 그들이 원하는 다중적인 역할을 수행함으 로써 농어촌지역 소규모 학교의 교직사회에 적응하였다. 셋째, 연구자로서의 나는 자기충족적인 방식으로 학교의 교육과정을 운영하고, 다인수 교실환경을 전제로 한 기존의 정형화 된 교수 법으로부터 벗어남으로써 농어촌지역의 소규모 학급에 적합한 교육과정과 수업을 실현할 수 있었다. 이 연구의 결과는 초등 교사 양성기관의 교육실습을 개선하고, 농어촌지역 소규모 초등학교 초임교사의 적응과 전문성 발달을 도모하기 위한 기초자료로써 기여할 수 있을 것이다.The aim of this paper is to provide an internal overview on the coping strategies of a novice teacher for socialization in a small elementary school in rural area. This paper applied an autoethnography to accomplish this purpose, and three core categories and six subcategories were derived from thematic analysis, which is based on the pragmatic eclecticism. The results of this paper were as follows. Firstly, as a novice teacher in a small elementary school in rural area, the teacherinternalized a hierarchical power relationship among faculty members of teaching society and the recommendations of senior staff. Secondly, as a novice teacher in a small elementary school in rural area, the teacher performed role of an optimized “multi-player” and “general consultant” in relationships with students and parents. Thirdly, as a novice teacher and researcher in a small elementary school in rural area, the teacher learned the school curriculum through a self-sufficient strategy, and applied a differential teaching method, which is different from pedagogy in large scale school. The results of this study will be a guideline to support novice teachers’ adaptation and development in small elementary schools in rural area, and this paper will contribute to improve practical exercise programs for elementary pre-service teachers.
