Abstract
In applying adaptive finite element analysis methods to stiffened structures, there often exist some topological difficulties for the mesh generation of stiffeners. The present paper describes a method to overcome these difficulties and the software we developed for the auto-adaptive analysis of stiffened structures. The key features of the method are integrally stiffened shell finite elements and automatic quadrilateral mesh. A new mesh refinement method, in which the mesh refinement formulations are derived at the element level, is also presented. The use of the new remeshing method can guarantee that the refined mesh is an optimal mesh, which, together with a sophisticated error estimate, enables the adaptive analysis to be much more effective.
