Abstract
The political unification of the Mediterranean world in the last epoch of the Roman Republic doubtless provided the stimulus for the composition of world histories. One of these is the only universal history written in Latin, under the titleHistoriae Philippicae, by Pompeius Trogus in the time of Augustus. The original work is lost, but we have anEpitomaproduced around the year A.D. 200 by Iustinus. Theprologi, which contain summaries of the original work, have been preserved, but there is no indication of authorship.
