Abstract

Introduction/Aims Oral cancer is recognised to be a major public health issue worldwide, with the incidence of the disease increasing over the past few decades. With approximately 4,000 deaths from head and neck cancer in 2016 and a survival rate of 19%-59% for 10 or more years, the importance of effective treatment is key. The British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists (BAHNO) outlined guidance in 2009 for the treatment of patients with head and neck cancer. Surgery is still considered to be one of the main methods of treatment for oncology patients. Therefore obtaining clear surgical margins in head and neck cancer is paramount in the survival of oncology patients.
