Abstract
A relational database integrated to a telephone-based interactive voice response system has been implemented for the monitoring and control of black bean aphid ( Aphis fabae) and peach/potato aphid ( Myzus persicae) in sugar beet. The relational database contains information pertaining to the farmer and the agronomic conditions of the field. Pre-recorded messages are used to guide the user during data entry and for advising control measures. The system has been implemented using INFORMIX-SQL RDBMS Version 2.10 under MD-DOS Version 3.30 and BigmOuth Voice Response System Version 3.0. The system is programmed in Microsoft C Version 6.0 with INFORMIX ESQL/C Version 2.10 and BigmOuth Toolkit Version 3.0 C programming interfaces. Twenty-two farmers evaluated the system for its usability and have indicated that the system is simple to use and provides timely advice on control measures. Compared with the earlier relational database system, which required 24–36 hours for the recommendations to reach the farmers due to the use of postal communication, the audiotex system provides recommendations immediately after data entry using a touch-tone telephone.
