An Attempt to Independently Verify the Utility of the Van Nuys Prognostic Index(VNPI) for DCIS

Abstract

Purpose/Objective: The VNPI purports to predict the risk of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) after excision of DCIS. It is a simple scoring scheme based upon a retrospective evaluation of data from a single group of investigators. The elements utilized include: tumor size, grade, margin width, and patient age. Despite the lack of independent validation, the VNPI is a commonly employed tool in the clinical management of patients with DCIS.
