Abstract
The Cauchy problem for a linear second-order uniformly parabolic equation with variable coefficients depending only on the spatial variable is considered. For two- and three-dimensional spaces, asymptotic expansions of the solution as t → +0 are written. It is shown how these expansions can be used in the study of inverse problems of determining the coefficients of a parabolic equation.
