Abstract

This paper is concerned with the seismic design of liquid-filled cylindrical storage tanks. Special emphasis is given to EUROCODE 8 (EC8), Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures, Part 4: Tanks, Silos and Pipelines (2nd draft, December 1993). The paper aims at assessing the accuracy of the newly proposed code in predicting the natural frequencies, maximum wave height, hydrodynamic pressures, overturning moment and base shear. The design of several liquid-filled storage tanks has been undertaken and the results are compared with those based on widely used codes. These case studies correspond to tanks which suffered seismic damage during past earthquakes and to those which were subjected to laboratory tests. It is envisaged that the paper will outline the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed code.
