Abstract

Abstract Previous studies have revealed that crofting areas contain a high proportion of houses below the officially tolerable standard. This paper, drawing on a household interview survey of the Uists, seeks to explain why crofters have been less successful in improving their housing conditions, despite a special system of housing subsidies available from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland. Five alternative hypotheses are explored, but the results suggest that the main factor is the insufficient means of these households.
