Abstract

A polarimeter for neutrons of a few MeV energy, which employs elastic scattering by lead through an angle of about 2°, is described and the efficiency of data collection and the accuracy attainable are discussed. A comparison is presented with a typical polarimeter relying on scattering by 4He. Data obtained with the 2H(d,n) 3He reaction for a mean deuteron energy of 575 keV illustrate the properties of the system. It is concluded that a polarimeter based on small angle scattering could compare in efficiency of data collection with a system employing scattering by high pressure 4He gas and could avoid the systematic error possible with a 4He system.
