Abstract

AbstractThe aggressive Western promotion of democracy, human rights and freedom of the press, held up as ideals in developed countries, may not work so well in the Third World. In fact, according to the writer, this campaign could aggravate, instead of ameliorate, the difficult conditions under which the majority of the world's population live. But are Western journalists and politicians ready to accept this? Are they ready for meaningful discussions with Asians on a ‘level playing field’. In this paper, the writer explores this possibility and gives his perspective, as an Asian, on human rights and freedom of the press.
