Abstract

This work was directed toward determining the value of synchronous spraying of all pear trees within a large area with Perthane®, (a mixture of 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis ( p -ethylphenyl) ethane (95%) and related reaction products (5%), during the late dormant period after overwintered pear psylla, Psylla pyricola Foerster, adults had emerged from hibernation. Thirty-five plots involving about 14,000 acres were treated with aerial and ground sprays. Both were very effective in killing the adults. However, with aerial sprays poorer control was obtained along orchard borders, under power lines, and in other hard-to-spray areas. The treatment improved the seasonal control of pear psylla, and growers indicated a saving of 1-2 summer sprays.
