Abstract

A voltage-controlled oscillator has been developed for electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) system. In EIS, VCO generates an alternating voltage signal which is utilized for measuring the impedance of the sample under test (SUT). In this paper, an Arduino UNO based multifrequency-VCO (Mf-VCO) is developed for EIS and the VCO performance is studied, tested and evaluated. The VCO is developed with a MAX038 IC and interfaced with the Arduino UNO to generated sinusoidal voltage signals at different frequencies. The digital control signals generated by the Arduino board are fed to an analog multiplexer circuit and the signal frequencies are controlled by connecting the different passive components to the VCO. The digital signal generation and multiplexer operation are assessed by an LED-based digital signal evaluator (LED-DSE) to assure the connectivity of the passive components and frequency control. Results show that the Mf-VCO is not only suitable for EIS studies of biological samples within a wide bandwidth but also for other multifrequency instrumentation.
