Abstract

AbstractThis paper describes the application of archaeological techniques to the study of a remarkable industrial building, the 1830 Warehouse which forms part of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway's terminus in Manchester. The results of the research have informed the strategy for the conservation of the building, and its adaptation to provide additional facilities at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Considerable information has been obtained about the methods of construction of the warehouse, the materials used, and its operation. Research on the construction timbers has added to knowledge of the international trade in this commodity in the 1830s.
