Abstract

A high precision finite element has been derived for large deflection and post-buckling analysis of thin arches of arbitrary shapes. Emphasis is placed on accurate representation of geometry at all stages of deformation. This approach ensures natural representation of rigid body modes, which is crucial for accurate integration of equation of motion through the critical points. Full non-linear expressions are retained to account for objectivity and interaction between axial force and bending moment.
