Abstract
For some dynamic soil-structure interaction problems under earthquake loadings, it is possible to develop an approximate method which can capture the essential dynamic properties of the system. Based on this idea, an approximate frequency-independent infinite element and an approximate method for simulating infinite media by this infinite element are presented in this paper. The merit of using this approximate method is that the discretized dynamic motion equation of the system can be described in time domain and therefore some nonlinear behaviour in the structure and the near field of the system can be simulated. Some numerical results obtained by this approximate method illustrated that good accuracy can be achieved using presented model, especially for the dynamic system which has a soft structure on the stiffer foundation.
