Abstract

The chemical potential of carbon across the weld interface of the diffusion couple in the Darken experiment is integrated into an analytical function of position and time. Upon the elimination of the chemical potential in preference of the carbon concentration, the well-known discontinuous carbon concentration is found in agreement with experiment such that the concentration ratio is inversely proportional to the ratio of the activity coefficients.
