Abstract

A method is described for deriving design curves which provide a smooth transition through the various modes of failure of steel beams and are therefore valid over the whole range of beam slendernesses. Comparison with available test results and the theory for perfect beams demonstrates the validity of the approach which leads to more manageable equations than previous methods.
