Abstract

Australia's population is concentrated in the coastal areas of the eastern seaboard, with the highest densities occurring in the Sydney region. The city of Sydney is served by three major sewerage systems with ocean outfalls. Primary treated sewage effluent was previously discharged from three cliff-face ocean outfalls, but from mid-1991 this effluent was discharged via deepwater outfalls. This paper discusses the rationale for construction of the deepwater outfalls, describes the monitoring programme being undertaken in association with their commissioning and outlines strategies to further reduce pollution in the Sydney region.
