Abstract

We describe a simple procedure for generating speech messages by means of the combination of a Bell Digital Signal Processor chip (DSP) and a conventional microprocessor. The method combines prosody rules developed for an articulatory synthesizer with concatenation of phonetically‐marked, stored representations of whole English words. A Motorola MC68000 microprocessor selects data, expands it from a very compressed form, and computes pitch and duration and some allophonic modifications at boundaries. The results are supplied to the DSP, which is programmed to operate as a formant synthesizer.
