Abstract

Abstract A simple method of paracentesis is described and shown to provide a safe, easy, and reliable means of examining abdominal fluid. The characteristics of the fluid associated with a variety of pathological conditions are discussed and the results of 100 consecutive taps are analysed. The technique is shown to be especially useful in certain groups of patients who otherwise present considerable diagnostic difficulty.
