Abstract
It is shown that the general properties of conventional nuclear shell strucure may be obtained in a natural way through a new quark-theoretical model based on the concept of an “overall” bag and the corresponding “quark-shells”. It contains as a main ingredient a direct quark-quark interaction which a.o. is responsible for the formation of substructures representing the embedded nucleons. The decisive point is to prove that the operator character and the absolute strength of this expression as determined through the characteristic empirical properties of spherical nuclei are in agreement with a general quantum chromodynamical treatment which uses in an essential way instantons in connection with Feynmann path integration.
