Abstract
This paper describes the method of image processing of a human face, and its application to man-machine interface. The case of an automobile driver is selected as an actual application. First, the eyes and lips of the driver are automatically recognized by scene analysis. An image of the driver's face is obtained by a video camera mounted on the dashboard. Second, visual performance is measured by image processing of the eye, so that the driver can input command via a line of vision. The alertness of the driver is also monitored by image processing of the eye. Third, the vowel sounds of the driver's voice are recognized by image processing of the lips.
