Abstract

This paper discusses how a commercially available speech recognition unit has been applied to an existing first generation robotic device to yield an effective demonstration system with possible industrial applications. Utilization of interesting software techniques enables the complete system to function without the keyboard interface in a multi-operator, speaker-dependent mode. The robotic device requires an initial training schedule but is activated by run-stop commands. As a result this investigation reveals what can be achieved by using a low cost, microcomputer based, speech recognition unit.
