Abstract

Bromine solution is used as a reagent for the determination of sulfa drugs as pure substances and in their dosage forms by an indirect titrimetric method. It is based on the reaction of sulfa drugs with an excess of saturated bromine water to form the corresponding N-bromo derivatives, which liberate equivalent amounts of iodine when reacted with iodide. The liberated iodine could be determined titrimetrically with thiosulfate, using starch as indicator. The recovery range 97.8–102.1% and the coefficient of variation is 0.1–2.2%, depending on the concentration levels of sulfa drugs.
