Abstract

The aim of this paper is to sketch a model-based crew aided-decision system for anticipatory operational flight issues management. The system, termed Virtual co-Pilot (VcP), is intended to anticipate off-normal flight conditions and to support aircrew for better planning of upcoming flight phases and recovery from critical flight regimes. The core element is based on a distributed set observer and predictor which provides reachable regions for which safe operations of the aircraft can be guaranteed, and their projection over a specified time window which includes optimization of the prediction horizon. Based on available control authorities the system should also provide guidance and control options for remaining in a safe flight maneuvering envelope. The system will not interfere with the Flight Control System, and the human pilots will keep the overall responsibility.
