Abstract

Anthropologists are beginning to concern themselves with urban problems in the United States. This paper describes the anthropological approach to a serious problem, narcotic addiction. The purposes of this paper are threefold: first, it will define a subculture of addiction composed of criminal narcotics addicts which has structural and functional features making it amenable to anthropological investigation; second, it will describe some difficulties encountered in the investigation of the subculture and methodological strategies which have been used to circumvent these difficulties; and lastly, it will attempt to relate how an applied anthropology approach can help to change various generalized perceptions of treatment and prevention agents toward the addict.
