Abstract

Abstract Because the taxonomic classification of fossils is an area of much fluidity, this guide is not one to the identification of the fossils; rather, it is a guide to the published literature concerning the various type fossils, to the localities from where the types were collected, and to the repositories in which the types have been placed. There are at least 14 categories of type rossils; but most are rarely encountered, and some of the categories may be unessential. Four of the basic kinds of types, and one kind of supplementary type, have been considered for inclusion in the present catalogue. In fact, no other kinds of type were encountered in the literature, so the restriction to the five kinds of types is not arbitrary.
