Abstract

Abstract The surface oxidation of UO2 fuel pellets at 200-230°C has been monitored by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Hydroxide formation and a film of β-U3O7 approximately seven monolayers thick is indicated at the pellet surface. A comparison of the present data with weight gain and X-ray diffraction measurements suggests extensive penetration of the bulk oxide by oxygen at these temperatures, but there is no clear sign of U3O8 formation.
