Abstract
이 연구는 김성국의 지역연구와 지역사회참여를 소개하는 동시에 지역사회학의 발전에 이론적으로 기여한 부분을 비판적으로 검토해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 김성국의 연구 및 실천적 성과를 개관하였고, 부족한 부분을 보강하기 위해서 김성국과 3회의 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 대상이 된 그의 주요 연구는 지역연구(지역주의, 지방 문화운동, 문화주의), 부산연구(지역 문화론, 부산 정신)와 부산학, 동아시아 연구(동아시아주의와 동아시아공동체) 및 아나키스트 지역연구(최소공동체와 연방주의), 그리고 해양사회학의 전망이다. 그는 지역발전을 위해서 문화주의적 접근을 강조하고, 세계화의 추세와 함께 지역적 관심을 동아시아(공동체)로 확대했으며, 미래의 해양시대를 대비하고자 해양사회학의 전망과 과제를 제시하는 선구자적 역할을 수행하고 있다.
