Abstract

An analytic treatment of an atmospheric washout and transport model is presented for pollutants released from an elevated source over fiat terrain. The rate of pollutant absorption by falling raindrops is calculated. Results show that the pollutants can be absorbed by the rain drops over distances as large as hundreds of kilometres from the source. The nature of the mean ambient concentration and the vertical profiles of the ambient concentration are also studied. Effects of multiple reflections from the non-absorbing upper and lower boundaries are evident from the nature of the solution.
