Abstract

Analysis of dose distribution data for the X-ray beam generated by a Varian Clinac-6 had led to the development of an equation which empirically models the central axis depth dose curve and the cross beam profile for any depth. Dose distributions in the principal planes can be calculated for any rectangular field. The model includes data for the build-up region. Wedge distributions can also be calculated, needing only the wedge angle as additional input. Simple oblique incidence can also be treated (considered as an air wedge). A significant advantage of the equation over the conventional grid-based representation of fields is the avoidance of having to enter any field into the computer's memory before it can be used. Also, changes in machine parameters or introduction of new or better dose distribution data does not result in previously entered beams becoming obsolete, only the relevant constants of the equation have to be changed. Application of similar models to 4 MeV and 60Co beams is presently being investigated.
