Abstract
The problem of the interference produced by the leading and trailing edges of a disc cutter when milling a helical slot is examined and the mechanism analysed. It is shown that the flank profiles of the work are a family of involutes which are generated by rolling the cutter axis around a generating evolute which in the cases considered is either a circle or the locus of the cutter centre. A complete mathematical treatment for the case of straight sided cutters (e.g. side and face) is presented and a method of calculating radial rake angle at any point on the rake face profile is developed. A graphical technique of solution is described for non-symmetrical or irregular shapes and the case for a non-symmetrical flutting cutter is illustrated. The significance and application of this particular type of interference and its relationship to tool design is discussed.
