Abstract

The present qualitative research, through the bibliographic procedure, has as literary corpus the tale Missa do Galo, by the Brazilian realistic writer Machado de Assis, aiming at the discussion of gender issues. For this, it focuses on the constitution of the female character Conceição, in the universe of her experiences, especially from her relationship with the character-narrator, Nogueira. In addition, the research reflects on Conceição’s role, showing that her submissive performance to her husband is essential in the reality of the social context of Brazil in the 19th century, like so many women surrounded by patriarchy.
