Abstract

The high demand of cooling energy for thermal comfort recently causing the problem of thermal comfort in a building. The use of a passive design strategy can be considered to be used in the building to achieve the desired temperature and prevent the use of electrical equipment. The objective of this study is to find the effectiveness of using green roof as an option of passive design strategy in residential buildings. This study used building simulation tool as virtual experimental method. Several alternatives’ models were identified in this research. The result of this study found that the use of intensive green roof resulted in the best performance. The decrease in cooling energy demands up to 21% could be achieved by using Tradescantia spathacea with a thickness of 0.7 m.
