Abstract

Abstract This study examines news broadcasts and news features/commentary from ten international radio broadcasting services to Africa on December 12, 1977. The authors first discuss the background and motivations for African broadcasts from the services. Data generated after coding tapes of the short‐wave broadcasts are discussed with regard to: (1) 20 identified news stories from the services; (2) the ordering of news stories; (3) the amount of time devoted to stories about Africa‐related news; and (4) news features and commentary. Broadcasting services included in the study are: British Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Station Peace and Progress (USSR), Radio Moscow, Voice of America, Voice of Nigeria, Radio Canada International, Broadcasting Service of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Israeli Broadcasting Authority, Radio Nederland, and Radio South Africa.
