Abstract

Dr. Thomas S. Szasz has stirred up a great deal of controversy by his claims concerning "the myth of mental illness." Dr. Thorne, Editor of the Journal of Clinical Psychology, is of the opinion that public confidence in psychiatry has been seriously undermined by Dr. Szasz' charge that many psychiatric practices infringe on human rights. In this paper Dr. Thorne undertakes an analysis of Dr. Szasz' principal contentions, concluding that his arguments are extremist and largely invalid.
