Abstract

• Japan saw a remarkable increase in tourism flows in the last decade. • An exploratory spatial analysis allowed us to identify tourism clusters. • The two spatial panel models found positive tourist and economic spillovers effects. • Neighboring tourists heighten the economic growth of Japanese prefectures. • Infrastructure and natural parks reinforce tourism spillovers between prefectures.
