Abstract

Price D. G. (1970) An analysis of retail turnover in England and Wales, Reg. Studies 4, 459–472. Significant relationships between turnover and the numbers of shops in centres in England and Wales are indicated by regression analysis. The pattern of residuals derived from the most satisfactory regression displays regional components that cannot be fully explained by over-provision of shops in some areas or by known regional variations in income. A better, though not complete, explanation is provided when the anomalies are interpreted as evidence of the role of “migrant custom”, the nature of which varies according to the stages of urbanization reached in different parts of the country.
