Abstract

Experimental results of the electrodeposition of cadmium from electrolyte solutions containing ferric ion and cadmium ion are described. The efficiency of the electrodeposition is limited by the concentration levels of ferric ion and cadmium ion. Ferric ion is readily reduced to ferrous ion under mass transport controlled conditions causing immediate loss in efficiency and also without adequate control of certain parameters further reductions lead to a significant amount of co-deposition of iron. The cadmium concentration cannot generally be reduced to lower than 20 ppm under the conditions employed. A mathematical model which describes metal deposition from mixed metal ion solution in batch recycle operation agrees in general with experimental data for cadmium electrodeposition.
